The picture above left, from the Aug/2/1948 Newport Plain Talk, shows Dick Clark when he played for the 1948 Newport Canners. The caption reads IS HOT– Dick Clark, Canner fire baller, won his twelfth win of the season Sunday by defeating the Pennington Gap Miners by the score of 5 to 1. The Miners hit safely but 3 times and Sports Writers of Pennington Gap said that “Clark is Hot”.

Dick led the league that season with a 20-9 record, and was a member of the league's all-star team. The picture above right is a blowup from the team picture below.

This is a midseason picture of the 1948 Newport (Tennessee) Canners of the Class D Mountain States League.
